A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CITY’S REQUEST FOR COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING TO COMPLETE THE LYONS ROAD PEDESTRIAN SAFETY LIGHTING PROJECT.

body

BACKGROUND:

The Lyons Road Pedestrian Safety Lighting Project is the result of a multi-agency collaboration effort that provides for regional connectivity and focuses on providing transportation options that are not car centric.  The majority of the original funding for this project was provided by the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).  In addition to the local match of $600,000, the City funded the installation of the lighting conduit so that the future pedestrian safety lighting could be installed without disrupting traffic.  This project is included in the long-range transportation plan of the MPO.

DISCUSSION:

Congressman Ted Deutch has the opportunity to advocate on behalf of up to 15 programs that are important to South Florida and the 22nd Congressional District by supporting applications for Community Project Funding.  Pedestrian safety is a clear priority that must be addressed, and the City is submitting an application with Broward County for Community Project Funding to provide funding for pedestrian safety lighting along the Lyons Road Corridor.  A resolution of support from the City of Coconut Creek’s Commission for the project is also encouraged as a part of the application process, and we will be submitting letters of support from the Mayor and the MPO. The proposed project will continue the City’s strategic efforts outlined in Vision 2030 towards adaptable and progressive mobility, safety and quality of life, and sustainable environment.

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
