A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SPECIAL EVENTS GRANT COMMITTEE TO ALLOCATE FUNDS OR IN-KIND SERVICES TO ASSIST WITH EVENTS ORGANIZED AND HOSTED BY CERTAIN NAMED NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT PROVIDE SERVICES TO CITY RESIDENTS.

body

BACKGROUND:

The City Commission previously reached consensus for staff to organize a program wherein non-profit organizations that provide services to City residents could apply for City grant money or in-kind services to host special events in the City of Coconut Creek. Each year during the annual budget process, the City Commission allocates $25,000 for this grant program, and City Staff compiles a list of applicants, past and present, to present to the City Commission for approval as a prerequisite for obtaining grant money or in-kind services.

To be included on the authorized organization list, the organization must apply and meet three (3) basic requirements:

1)                     The organization must have a non-profit certification with tax exempt status;

2)                     The organization (or sponsored event) must serve Coconut Creek residents; and

3)                     The organization is not a party to discriminatory activity.

DISCUSSION:

The City is committed to allowing non-profit organizations to apply to receive special event assistance grants and to updating the authorized organization list with the following additions:

1)                     Do the Right Thing of Coconut Creek, Inc.

2)                     NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness) of Broward County

3)                     Gifts from Jada Foundation, Inc.

In addition, this Resolution gives staff the authority to approve grants or in-kind services up to $1,000 to a qualified non-profit organization that has not been approved by this Resolution, but will be added in the subsequent year.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
