A RESOLUTION APPOINTING A MEMBER TO THE CITY COMMISSION TO FILL THE REMAINDER OF A VACATED TERM FOR DISTRICT D ENDING IN MARCH 2023, PURSUANT TO CITY CHARTER SECTION 305.C., “FILLING OF VACANCIES.”

BACKGROUND:
The resignation of Commissioner Lou Sarbone, District D, became effective April 1, 2022. Pursuant to City Charter Section 305.c., “Filling of Vacancies,” this vacancy requires the remaining Commission members, by a majority vote, to appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy within thirty (30) days of the vacancy. The appointee shall serve until the swearing in of their successor after certification of election results after the next regular City Election, scheduled for March 14, 2023, and be a resident qualified voter of the same district in which the vacancy has occurred for at least 12 months.
DISCUSSION:
Upon receiving Commissioner Sarbone’s resignation, the City Commission gave direction to City staff to post a notice of vacancy for the District D Commission Seat in order to solicit interested residents for the vacancy. The notice of vacancy was posted on March 28, 2022, which invited eligible residents to submit the Statement of Eligibility and Interest Questionnaire to the City Clerk no later than April 14, 2022, to be considered for the appointment. The City Commission is scheduled to review and discuss five (5) submittals for the vacancy at the April 28, 2022, Commission Workshop at 4 p.m. The candidates include: John Brodie, Wellington De Faria, Alfred Delgado, Aimee Hooper, and John (Jack) Vesey.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
