A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CITY’S REQUEST FOR COMMUNITY PROJECT FUNDING TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF BODY-WORN CAMERAS AND RELATED TECHNOLOGY.
body
BACKGROUND:
The City of Coconut Creek is committed to a high level of safety and proactive community policing. To this end, the Police Department is in the process of developing an officer safety program that will include body-worn cameras. This program will be presented in its entirety as a program modification during the budget process. Body-worn cameras have been proven to provide additional safety and accountability measures, including strengthening officer performance and accountability, enhancing agency transparency, documenting encounters between the police and the public, investigating and resolving complaints and officer-involved incidents, and improving evidence collection.
DISCUSSION:
Congressman Ted Deutch has the opportunity to advocate on behalf of up to 15 programs that are important to South Florida cities and the 22nd Congressional District by supporting applications for Community Project Funding. Community safety is a clear priority that must be addressed, and the City is submitting an application for Community Project Funding to provide funding for body-worn cameras and related technology. A resolution of support from the City of Coconut Creek Commission is encouraged as a part of the application process, and the City will be submitting letters of support from the Mayor and Police Chief. The proposed project will continue the City’s strategic efforts outlined in Vision 2030 towards ensuring safety and a high quality of life for the Coconut Creek community.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
