body
BACKGROUND:
The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is established for the purposes set forth in Section 230.2318, Florida Statutes, including assistance in the prevention of juvenile delinquency through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions that give rise to delinquency.
On October 2, 2018, the City and SBBC entered into an agreement for the school year. The agreement provided for twelve (12) police officers to work as SROs in the following Coconut Creek schools: Coconut Creek Elementary, Winston Park Elementary, Tradewinds Elementary, Lyons Creek Middle (2), Coconut Creek High (2), Monarch High (2), Atlantic Technical Center, Atlantic Technical College, and Dave Thomas Educational Center West. Eleven (11) of the SROs cover the ten (10) month period, beginning August 8, 2018, and ending June 5, 2019, and one (1) SRO assigned to Atlantic Technical College for the period beginning August 8, 2018, and ending August 7, 2019. The agreement provided revenues in the amount of $62,400 per month for twelve (12) SROs for ten (10) months from the School Board during the term of the agreement, for a total of $634,400.
DISCUSSION:
The City is committed to protecting and serving its residents. The SRO Program is a great benefit to school administration, students, and the community as a whole. This amendment provides for one (1) SRO to be assigned to Dave Thomas Educational Center West from June 6, 2019, through July 31, 2019, for which the City will receive the sum of $10,400 ($5,200/month), bringing the total to $644,800 from the School Board for these services.
