BACKGROUND:

This item was approved on First Reading at the February 28, 2019, City Commission Meeting.

At the June 18, 2018, Commission Workshop, the City Commission directed staff to create a Public Safety Advisory Board.

DISCUSSION:

The Public Safety Advisory Board (“Board”) will act in an advisory capacity to the City Commission in matters relating to public safety that may impact the community. Members will become acquainted with the operation and varied activities of the Police Department and the Fire Department; foster understanding and communication between the residents of Coconut Creek, the Police Department, and the Fire Department; review community needs, concerns, expectations and responses relative to police, fire, and emergency medical services; advise and provide support for enhanced communication and education between the community and the police and fire departments; and strengthen and ensure, throughout the community, the application of equal protection under the law.  The Board will consist of five (5) regular members and one (1) alternate member and meet on a quarterly basis.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this ordinance.
