body
BACKGROUND:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 72,000 people, or an average of 197 people per day, died in the United States as a result of a drug poisoning (overdose) in 2017. In the State of Florida, according to the Florida Medical Examiners Commission, there have been 3,234 accidental deaths this year caused by a prescription drug poisoning (overdose), representing a 48 percent increase over the previous year.
Senate Bill (S.) 2456 and House Bill (H.R.) 5311, “The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) 2.0,” are two very comprehensive bills that provide for public education and prescribing limits by doctors on a national level and provide funding to local governments and first responders for naloxone and training.
DISCUSSION:
The City of Coconut Creek is committed to raising awareness about prescription drug poisoning (overdose) prevention. We hope to combat stigma and educate our community by proclaiming and declaring August 31, 2018, as “Overdose Awareness Day,” urging approval of S. 2456 and H.R. 5311, and supporting the National FEDUP Rally being held in Washington, D.C. on October 7, 2018.
