A PRESENTATION TO HONOR EMPLOYEES FROM THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND POLICE DEPARTMENT WHO RESPONDED TO A RECENT TRAFFIC INCIDENT.

BACKGROUND:
On August 7, 2018, staff from the City’s Public Works Department were repairing a main line break at the Coconut Creek Community Center. While they were working, they noticed a car sitting still in the middle of Lyons Road after the light had changed and traffic began moving. Concerned that something may be wrong, the crew approached the vehicle and noticed that two of the occupants appeared to be unconscious in the front seat. They began banging on the windows in an attempt to awaken the occupants, but they remained unresponsive, so they immediately called 911. While waiting for the police, they made sure to control traffic to divert a traffic jam and keep any vehicles from colliding with the car.
Police Officer Shana Conley was driving north on Lyons Road on her day off when she was waved down by the Public Works crew. The crew explained the situation and transferred control of the incident to her, while remaining nearby to assist as necessary. Officer Conley quickly assessed the situation and broke one of the rear windows. At that time, she noticed a 4-year old child in the back seat. She put the car in park and ushered the girl to safety. The unconscious occupants were the girl’s mother and uncle, who were both arrested and face charges of drug possession and child neglect.
