A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER, OR DESIGNEE, TO EXECUTE AN INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT WITH BROWARD COUNTY FOR SHARING THE COST OF THE 100-YEAR FLOOD ELEVATION MAP AND ASSOCIATED MODELING.
body
BACKGROUND:
Since 1977, three county-wide Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood insurance studies have been completed for Broward County. Each study released, updated, and typically increased base flood elevation requirements for buildings. Recently, sea level rise has become a major area of concern. The latest FEMA flood maps adopted in 2014 did not take sea level rise into consideration. Broward County and participating cities, including Coconut Creek, are working towards updating the Broward County 100-year Flood Elevation Map to incorporate future climatic conditions, including sea level rise.
DISCUSSION:
The City is committed to understanding the predicted sea level rise and its effects on the 100-Year Flood Elevation Map and associated modeling. Through adoption of this Resolution, the City will help improve the regulations needed to protect the health and safety of the residents and visitors by making informed decisions relating to finished floor elevations of new construction.
