BACKGROUND:
The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is established for the purposes set forth in Section 230.2318, Florida Statutes, including assisting in the prevention of juvenile delinquency through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions that give rise to delinquency.
DISCUSSION:
The City is committed to protecting and serving its residents. The SRO Program is a great benefit to school administration, students, and the community as a whole. The City entered into an agreement with the School Board for eight (8) SROs dated July 25, 2017 ("Agreement"). After execution of the Agreement, the City requested another SRO for the Dave Thomas Education Center-West Campus. This Amendment to the Agreement provides for nine (9) police officers to work as SROs in the following Coconut Creek schools: Coconut Creek Elementary, Winston Park Elementary, Tradewinds Elementary, Lyons Creek Middle, Coconut Creek High (2), Monarch High, Atlantic Technical Center, and the Dave Thomas Education Center-West Campus. The original Agreement was for a ten (10) month period, beginning August 14, 2017, and ending June 7, 2018. The Amendment provides that funding for the additional SRO will commence on November 1, 2017, and end on June 7, 2018. The City will receive $41,626.80 monthly from the School Board during the term of the amended Agreement compared with the prior monthly payment of $37,001.60.
