A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO EXECUTE THE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER (SRO) AGREEMENT WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD OF BROWARD COUNTY FOR A PERIOD COMMENCING AUGUST 14, 2017, AND ENDING JUNE 7, 2018.

BACKGROUND:
The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is established for the purposes set forth in Section 230.2318, Florida Statutes, including assistance in the prevention of juvenile delinquency through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions that give rise to delinquency.
DISCUSSION:
The City is committed to protecting and serving its residents. The SRO Program is a great benefit to school administration, students, and the community as a whole. The attached School Resource Officer Agreement provides for eight (8) police officers to work as SROs in the following Coconut Creek schools: Coconut Creek Elementary, Winston Park Elementary, Tradewinds Elementary, Lyons Creek Middle, Coconut Creek High (2), Monarch High, and Atlantic Technical Center. The Agreement is for a ten (10) month period, beginning August 14, 2017, and ending June 7, 2018. The City will receive $37,001.60 from the School Board monthly during the term of the Agreement. The City has requested SRO funding for the Dave Thomas Education Center and is waiting for approval from the School Board. This may be heard at the June 20th School Board workshop.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
