A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO EXECUTE THE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER (SRO) AGREEMENT WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD OF BROWARD COUNTY FOR A PERIOD COMMENCING ON OCTOBER 1, 2016, AND ENDING ON JUNE 9, 2017. (ADDENDUM)

body

BACKGROUND:

The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is established for the purposes set forth in Section 230.2318, Florida Statutes, including assisting in the prevention of juvenile delinquency through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions that give rise to delinquency.

DISCUSSION:

The City is committed to protecting and serving its residents.  The SRO Program is a great benefit to school administration, students, and the community as a whole.  The attached School Resource Officer Agreement provides for eight (8) police officers to work as SROs in the following Coconut Creek schools:  Coconut Creek Elementary, Winston Park Elementary, Tradewinds Elementary, Lyons Creek Middle, Coconut Creek High (2), Monarch High, and Atlantic Technical Center.  The Agreement is for an eight (8) month period, beginning October 1, 2016, and ending June 9, 2017.

The City will receive $37,001.60 from the School Board for each of the SROs, which is less than the $46,252.00 that was previously offered by the School Board last year and in the proposed Agreement that was approved by the City Commission on August 11, 2016.  The School Board’s auditors determined after our August 11th City Commission meeting that the School Board had proposed to pay for 10 months of SRO services when only eight (8) months are required; therefore, the amount has been reduced in the attached Agreement.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of the attached Agreement.
