A MOTION TO ACCEPT THE NORTH BROWARD PREPARATORY SCHOOL (NBPS) PROPOSED PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION TO BE FEATURED AS AN ART WALK LOCATED BETWEEN THE ATHLETIC FIELDS ON THE NBPS CAMPUS, IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 13-146, CODE OF ORDINANCES.

body

BACKGROUND:

In 2008, the City Commission furthered its commitment to provide public art by adopting the Public Art Program.   The Public Art Ordinance, which established requirements for public art and created a public art fund, is applicable to non-residential development greater than 12,500 square feet in gross floor area.  Generally, the requirements provide for the owner of a development to provide art work valued at fifty cents ($0.50) per square foot, or to pay forty cents ($0.40) per square foot as an art fee to the City’s Public Art Fund.

DISCUSSION:

As part of the NBPS site plan process, the applicant chose to select a professional artist and provide a public art installation, a sculpture, to be valued at not less than $20,000.  The proposed installation is valued at $23,500.  Attached for your information is the artist’s background  and drawing of the proposed art piece with approximate dimensions. (This piece is anticipated to be the first of several to be placed along an Art Walk on the NBPS Campus - see attached map).

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff reviewed the proposal and recommends approval of the public art installation, in accordance with Chapter 13, Article II, Division 1, Section 13-146 “Art Selection Criteria,” of the Code of Ordinances for appropriateness, visual accessibility to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and quality.
