A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER, OR DESIGNEE, TO EXECUTE THE ATTACHED MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT (MOA) WITH THE STATE OF FLORIDA, DIVISION OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT (FDEM), TO PROVIDE THE CITY WITH AN EMERGENCY ALERT AND MASS NOTIFICATION SYSTEM TO BE USED FOR COMMUNICATION AND WARNINGS IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS.

body

BACKGROUND:

The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) has entered into an agreement with Everbridge, Inc. to provide an emergency alert and notification system (“Notification System”), which is available to local jurisdictions throughout the state without charge.  Per Florida Statute Section 252.35(2)(a)6, the FDEM is required to establish a system of communications and warning to ensure the state’s population and emergency management agencies are warned of developing emergency situations and can communicate response decisions.

DISCUSSION:

Approval of the MOA will permit the City of Coconut Creek to participate in the state’s AlertFlorida initiative, utilizing the Notification System without incurring cost to the City. The Notification System will allow the City to transmit emergency alerts, notifications, and other authorized safety messaging to residents, businesses, and visitors located in the City.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
