BACKGROUND:
As part of the annual Legislative process, the City applies for Federal appropriations. One (1) of the City's submitted projects, body worn cameras and related technologies, was selected to receive $963,000 through the Department of Justice (DOJ) Byrne Discretionary Community Project Grants/Byrne Discretionary Grants Program.
DISCUSSION:
The City of Coconut Creek is committed to a high level of safety and proactive community policing. Body-worn cameras have been proven to provide additional safety and accountability, enhancing agency transparency, documenting encounters between the police and the public, investigating and resolving complaints and officer-involved incidents, and improving evidence collection. The awarded grant funding will be used to implement the Police Department Body-Worn Cameras Program as a vital component of the Officer Safety Program.
With the acceptance of the grant, the Police Department will be able to establish a centralized body-worn camera program. The new administrator is expected to be placed within the Records Department, providing a convenient location for managing equipment and related tasks. The repurposed Police Department mailroom is expected to serve as a secure, ventilated storage space for the body-worn camera equipment. This strategic arrangement is expected to streamline operations, enhance oversight, and ensure efficient utilization of the body-worn camera technology.
