A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO EXECUTE THE ATTACHED AGREEMENT WITH THE STATE OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION FOR THE DESIGNATION OF OAK TRAILS PARK AND TRAIL AS PART OF THE FLORIDA GREENWAYS AND TRAILS SYSTEM.
body
BACKGROUND:
The Florida Greenways and Trails System is a network of greenways and trails throughout Florida, connecting one end of the State to the other, from Key West to Pensacola. Within Coconut Creek, Pine Creek Greenway, Sabal Pines Park, and Winston Park Nature Center have all previously received this State designation.
DISCUSSION:
The City applied to the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for the designation of Oak Trails Park and Trail to be part of the Florida Greenways and Trails System. Oak Trails Park and Trail plays a large role in connecting our local greenway system and supports this very important State initiative, designating lands and waterways as part of the statewide system of greenways and trails. Oak Trails Park and Trail will be Coconut Creek’s fourth designation by the Florida Greenways and Trails Program.
On June 27, 2018, the Florida Greenways and Trails Council approved the City’s application for the greenways and trails designation, subject to submittal of the attached Designation Agreement. The departments of Sustainable Development and Parks and Recreation have reviewed the Designation Agreement and both departments see this as a wonderful opportunity to showcase our trails.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
