BACKGROUND:

The City Commission approved funding earlier this year to purchase a canine trained to find scents related to firearms and to train a new handler for the dog. On November 8, 2019, Police Officer Michael Leonard and K9 Taylor, a 17-month-old female Labrador Retriever, graduated from the Vapor Wake K9 Academy in Anniston, Alabama. Officer Leonard and K9 Taylor will assist the other School Resource Officers (SRO) in keeping Coconut Creek schools safe.  Officer Leonard and K9 Taylor are the first Police Department SRO team in the nation to be trained by the Academy.
