BACKGROUND:
Recent reinstatement of curbside recycling to the City’s Solid Waste and Recyclable Materials Collection and Disposal Agreement have necessitated updates to the City’s Code of Ordinances to reflect those changes.
DISCUSSION:
On August 13, 2026, the City Commission of the City of Coconut Creek approved the Amended and Restated Exclusive Franchise Agreement with Republic Services of Florida, L.P. for the collection of solid waste and recyclable materials in order to provide for the reinstatement of curbside recycling. Therefore, the proposed ordinance changes are necessary in order to be consistent with the current Solid Waste and Recyclable Collection and Disposal Agreement. In addition, the changes include a provision prohibiting anyone other than the City’s exclusive franchisee from removing construction or demolition debris, refuse, solid waste, or garbage from commercial or industrial properties. Violations are subject to a $500-per-day civil penalty for each day the violation continues.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this ordinance.
