BACKGROUND:
The applicant, Buttonwood Hammock Homeowners Association, is requesting $6,250 in matching funds from the Neighborhood Enhancement Grant Program. The proposed project seeks to enhance the aesthetics and sustainability of the community by revising the street tree plan to include the "Right Tree, Right Place" principles. The project is eligible under the multi-phase design project category of the Neighborhood Enhancement Grant Program Guidelines. The Program has a $65,000 budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 20. The Buttonwood Hammock community is located southwest of City Hall. Access to the community is from Hammock Boulevard off of Copans Road.
DISCUSSION:
The City is committed to enhancing community aesthetics and promoting a positive environmental image; this grant project furthers this strategic initiative. The applicant has proposed a two part multi-phase plan. Phase I proposes to design a new street tree plan for the Buttonwood Hammock community. Phase II of the multi-phase plan proposes to install common area trees, utilizing the new street tree plan. The Buttonwood Hammock community is a traditional neighborhood, developed in the early to mid-1990s. Much of the original street tree design material is no longer compatible with surrounding areas due to their size and growth habit. The City has been working with the applicant to address these issues. The applicant is procuring the design services of MLA Landscape Architecture to review the current conditions and provide solutions through a new street tree master plan, which will be enforced at the time of tree failure or potential endangerment.
