BACKGROUND:

The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is established for the purposes set forth in Section 230.2318, Florida Statutes, including assisting in the prevention of juvenile delinquency through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions that give rise to delinquency.

DISCUSSION:

The City is committed to protecting and serving its residents.  The SRO Program is a great benefit to school administration, students, and the community as a whole.  The attached agreement provides for twelve (12) police officers to work as SROs in the following Coconut Creek schools:  Coconut Creek Elementary (1), Winston Park Elementary (1), Tradewinds Elementary (1), Lyons Creek Middle (2), Coconut Creek High (2), Monarch High (2), Atlantic Technical Center (1), Atlantic Technical College (1), and Dave Thomas Educational Center West (1).  The City will receive $65,520 per month for twelve (12) SROs for the ten (10) month period beginning August 8, 2019, and ending June 3, 2020. Additionally, the City will receive two installments of $10,920 for June 2020 and July 2020, to have one (1) SRO assigned to Atlantic Technical College and one (1) SRO assigned to Dave Thomas Educational Center West. The City will receive a total of $677,040 from the School Board during the term of the agreement.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
