BACKGROUND:
The City applied for and was awarded the Broward County EMS Grant in the amount of $17,995.00. Grant funding will be used to procure five new Smiths Medical Pneupac VR 1 Ventilators at $3,599 each. This device allows responders to obtain a more consistent ventilation rate and tidal volume in alternative to manual ventilation, which is important for providing the best in patient care for those suffering respiratory failure.
DISCUSSION:
Acquisition of this grant saves the Coconut Creek Fire Rescue Department (CCFR) and the City $17,995.00. The Smiths Medical Pneupac VR 1 Ventilator is a life saving device designed for breathing failure emergencies. The unit's simplicity, portability, and safety make it the ideal choice for emergency resuscitation. A single control for setting the frequency and tidal volume, including a click-stop setting at the recommended adult position, enables rapid set-up in demanding circumstances. Auto/manual controls, a patient demand system, MR compatibility, and other features provide the means to manage respiratory emergencies. Portable mechanical ventilators are intended for use with patients who are being treated or transported in the field or within a healthcare facility. Within the United States, pre-hospital use of portable ventilators has largely been limited to air medical transport and critical care interfacility transfer ambulances, but many countries throughout the world mandate pre-hospital use of mechanical ventilators for patients who require ventilation. By providing this option to our patients, CCFR will be offering the highest level of service and patient care possible.
