BACKGROUND:

Each year, the Broward County Historic Preservation Board recognizes one (1) person from each City, who has made an impact on their communities.  In 2022, the City of Coconut Creek nominated long-time resident Donald Schlichtmann for this prestigious honor.

Donald Schlichtmann, son of Katherine and Henry Schlichtmann, moved from New Jersey in 1970 with his wife, Barbara, and children, Donna, Diane and Donald. He came to Coconut Creek to enjoy the peace, vast amount of farmland, and large parcel of land to house his horses.  In 1972, he served as Coconut Creek’s first Volunteer Fire Chief, establishing a department of approximately twenty men. In 1973, he served as an advisor to the builders of the City’s first community center, known today as the Rowe Activity Center.  He was active in the community, helping to organize and participate in parades in South Creek, which was the only developed area in Coconut Creek at the time.  Mr. Schlichtmann was the original owner of his home in South Creek where his daughter, Diane, still resides today.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mr. Schlichtmann was unable to attend the Broward County Pioneer Days Ceremony in Wilton Manors following his nomination by the City last year.  The City Commission is pleased to honor Mr. Schlichtmann at the January 26, 2023, City Commission Meeting to recognize him and present him with a special Certifiate of Recognition for being both a Broward County Pioneer and a respected, long time Coconut Creek Pioneer.
