A RESOLUTION APPOINTING LAURA MCDERMOTT MATHERIC AS THE CITY’S FIRST POET LAUREATE FOR A TWO-YEAR TERM BEGINNING ON SEPTEMBER 1, 2022, AND ENDING AUGUST 31, 2024.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Coconut Creek seeks to promote poetry and the literary arts to all sectors of the community and encourages the reading of existing and new poetry at civic occasions, local celebrations, and City-sponsored events.

 

DISCUSSION:

Laura McDermott Matheric received her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Poetry from Florida International University.  She is a published author and a tenured professor at Broward College where she regularly teaches writing workshops and a literature course, as well as teaching writing and literature throughout the community.  She is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Orange Island Arts Foundation. The City will provide an honorarium of $250 per year, not to exceed of $500 for the two-year term.

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
