BACKGROUND:

The City recently learned that Kanter Real Estate LLC., a Florida for profit corporation, has submitted a permit application for an exploratory oil well in the Florida Everglades approximately six miles west of Miramar's City limits.  Through this Resolution, the City Commission states its opposition to the requested oil drilling permit, and directs the City Clerk to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Broward County, all Broward County municipalities, the Broward County League of Cities, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

DISCUSSION:

The City is committed to opposing environmentally harmful operations that could endanger the residents of the City and all of Broward County such as horizontal oil drilling, hydraulic fracturing (fracking), and other extreme well stimulation methods. In fact, the City has already adopted an ordinance within the City’s Code to prohibit such practices within the City.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
