BACKGROUND:
In 2002, the City of Coconut Creek acquired a ten (10) acre parcel behind Monarch High School with the intention of using it for future public safety-related development. This parcel is located within the City's MainStreet Project Area. Based on current need and projected need, the City's temporary Fire Station #113 was located in this area. Construction of the temporary Fire Station #113 was completed in 2021. Also in 2021, the City terminated its fire services agreement with the City of Margate and formed its own Fire Department. Both have resulted in the need for additional space. Additionally, the City's Police Department has outgrown its space. Based on direction from the City Commission, staff is evaluating the potential to expand this facility on the City hall campus. Walters Zackria Associates, PLLC was retained by the City to conduct the preliminary needs assessment for these facilities and is qualified to perform these design services.
DISCUSSION:
To address the needs of both the Fire and Police Departments, a permanent fire station with a redundant server room and a fire administration building is being proposed for construction at the above-mentioned City-owned ten (10) acre vacant parcel. An expansion and reconfiguration of the existing Police Department building is being proposed to accommodate the current and future space needs of the Police Department.
