body

BACKGROUND:

This item was approved on First Reading at the April 13, 2023, City Commission Meeting.

The collection and disposal of garbage, refuse, and recyclable waste in Florida and in Broward County has changed significantly since the 1980s, which was the last time that Chapter 12 of the City’s Code of Ordinances was updated. Further, recent changes to State law and to the City’s Solid Waste and Recyclable Materials Collection and Disposal Agreement have necessitated updates to the City’s Code of Ordinances to reflect those changes.

DISCUSSION:

In September 2021, the City Commission of the City of Coconut Creek approved Amendment No. 1 to the September 10, 2019, Agreement with Republic Services of Florida, Limited Partnership for the collection of solid waste and recyclable materials in order to remove most references to residential recycling due to changes in market conditions regarding recycling. Therefore, the proposed ordinance changes are necessary in order to comport with the reality of current conditions and to be consistent with our current Solid Waste and Recyclable Materials Collection and Disposal Agreement.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this ordinance.
