A RESOLUTION APPROVING AN INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY OF COCONUT CREEK, THE CITY OF MARGATE, AND THE BROWARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PROVIDING FOR COOPERATIVE EMERGENCY SERVICES THROUGH AUTOMATIC AID FOR FIRE RESCUE SERVICES FOR AN INITIAL TERM ENDING ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2017.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Coconut Creek, the City of Margate, and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office desire to enter into a mutually-beneficial Interlocal Agreement (ILA) for the delivery of automatic and mutual aid fire rescue services.

DISCUSSION:

This Agreement will commence upon approval by the Coconut Creek City Commission and end on September 30, 2017, with four (4) one-year automatic renewals or otherwise until terminated by the parties in writing.  The City of Margate approved this Agreement on October 19, 2016, by Resolution No.16-300.

To fulfill the Agreement, Broward County Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue will automatically respond with fire apparatus from the Deerfield Beach Fire Station on Hillsboro Boulevard to any structure fire in Coconut Creek’s Station 94 zone. Fire units from Station 94 will reciprocate and respond with a fire unit to part of Deerfield Beach for any structure fire. The anticipated outcome of this Interlocal Agreement for the City of Coconut Creek is a reduced response time to structure fires in the Station 94 zone. Response times and call volume will be monitored, and if it is found that an undue stress is placed on the Station 94 units, the ILA includes provisions to address this, including termination of the agreement with sixty (60) days’ notice.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
