BACKGROUND:

The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is established for the purposes set forth in Section 230.2318, Florida Statutes, including assisting in the prevention of juvenile delinquency through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions that give rise to delinquency.

DISCUSSION:

The City is committed to protecting and serving its residents. The SRO Program is a great benefit to school administration, students, and the community as a whole. The attached agreement provides for twelve (12) police officers to work as SROs for ten (10) months in the following Coconut Creek schools: Coconut Creek K-8 Academy of Excellence (1), Winston Park Elementary (1), Tradewinds Elementary (1), Coconut Creek High School (2), Lyons Creek Middle (2), Monarch High School (2), Atlantic Technical Center (1), Atlantic Technical College (1), and Dave Thomas Educational Center (1).

Additionally, the attached agreement provides for two (2) SROs for the summer months.  One (1) SRO will be assigned to Atlantic Technical College, and one (1) SRO will be assigned to Dave Thomas Educational Center during those two (2) months.

The agreement term is retroactive to August 3, 2026, and ends on July 30, 2027. In the 2026-2027 school year, the City will receive Eleven Thousand, Nine Hundred and Twenty-Three Dollars and 54/100 Cents ($11,923.54) per SRO per month.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
