AGENDA ITEM REPORT
TITLE:
title
A RESOLUTION OPPOSING HOUSE BILL 521 AND SENATE BILL 574 AND URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO REJECT THESE BILLS RELATED TO THE REGULATION OF THE TRIMMING, REMOVAL, OR HARVESTING OF TREES AND TIMBER ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND PROHIBITING CERTAIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACTIONS RELATING TO THE TRIMMING OR HARVESTING OF TREES.
body
BACKGROUND:
HB 521 and SB 574 prohibit local governmental actions relating to the trimming or removal of trees on a landowner’s private property, or prohibit the requirement of the replacement of trees that have been removed from a property or a fee paid in lieu of replacement.
DISCUSSION:
The City of Coconut Creek’s 2018 State Legislative Agenda opposes any legislation that lessens environmental protection at the local level, including preemption of local authority such as through statewide or uniform rules, and statewide standards on issues related to environmental regulations and enforcement. We believe the opposition of HB 521 and SB 574 would be in the best interest of residents and businesses of the City of Coconut Creek and would further reinforce the City’s value of an urban tree canopy and being named a Tree City USA community for the past 20 years.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
