A MOTION TO APPOINT KATHRYN M. MEHAFFEY AS DEPUTY CITY ATTORNEY FOR THE CITY OF COCONUT CREEK.

BACKGROUND:
Pursuant to Section 904 of the City’s Charter, “The Commission shall appoint a City Attorney and the City’s Attorney shall appoint such Assistant City Attorneys as he/she deems necessary subject to final approval by the City Commission.”
DISCUSSION:
The City posted the position of full-time, in-house Deputy City Attorney in November 2018 and advertised until late December 2018. In-person interviews were held the last week of January and the first week of February 2019 with an interview panel consisting of Terrill Pyburn, City Attorney; Sanjeev Bissessar, Risk Manager; Karen Brooks, Deputy City Manager/Chief Financial Officer; Leslie Wallace May, City Clerk; Scott Stoudenmire, Deputy Director of Sustainable Development; and Eve M. Lewis, Assistant City Attorney. All interviewers were impressed with Ms. Mehaffey.
Ms. Mehaffey obtained her law degree from Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center, and obtained her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University. Ms.Mehaffey was a Partner at the law firm of Weiss Serota Cole & Bierman, P.L., specializing in municipal and land use law prior to her application for Deputy City Attorney with the City of Coconut Creek. In addition to Ms. Mehaffey’s twenty (20) years of experience in local government, she is an experienced planner. If approved by the City Commission, Ms. Mehaffey will begin employment with the City of Coconut Creek on April 1, 2019.

The City Attorney recommends approval of this motion.
