BACKGROUND:
The City of Coconut Creek and the School Board of Broward County have been working on a solution to alleviate the traffic congestion at the front of Lyons Creek Middle School during the morning when the children are being dropped off and in the afternoon when they are being picked up from school.
DISCUSSION:
The primary concern is that the parent loop located in the front of Lyons Creek Middle School, along Sol Press Boulevard, causes major traffic congestion during school drop off in the morning and during dismissal in the afternoon, resulting in backed up traffic, ongoing road and drive-way blockages, restricted emergency vehicle access, and escalating safety concerns. For more than a decade, the City has taken the proactive and necessary role of addressing the traffic and safety concerns at Lyons Creek Middle School. City staff has worked closely with school staff and the School Board of Broward County over the past few years to develop a joint solution.
The City and the School Board agree that "flipping" the current location of the bus loop and parent loop is the best solution to reduce congestion along Sol Press Boulevard during the school's arrival and dismissal times, and the parties agree to expend funds to implement the updated Lyons Creek Middle School Traffic Circulation Plan for the upcoming school year. Please note that the agreement obligates the City to construct two driveway modifications along Sol Press Boulevard. We have available funding to carry out these modifications. The agreement also obligates the City to budget for the installation of a fence around the natural area.
