body

BACKGROUND:

This item was approved on First Reading at the October 26, 2023, City Commission Meeting.

Electric vehicles (EV) play a pivotal role in mitigating the detrimental effects of greenhouse gas emissions. The significant reduction in emissions associated with electric vehicles underscores the urgent need to endorse the establishment of essential infrastructure and charging facilities that bolster their widespread adoption.

In light of this imperative, the City has observed a growing enthusiasm among property developers who aspire to incorporate EV charging stations, or EV ready infrastructure, within their projects. The City is wholeheartedly committed to collaborating with the development community and actively championing their endeavors to construct and design for a sustainable future. This cooperative approach aligns with the City’s environmental goals and demonstrates our dedication to fostering a greener, cleaner tomorrow.

DISCUSSION:

This ordinance amends Chapter 6, “Buildings and Buildings Regulations,” to provide a new section, Section 6-1, “Electric Vehicle Charging Station Design Guidelines.” This will allow the necessary installation guidelines to be available in a dedicated location for straightforward use. Providing more explicit installation guidelines supports Coconut Creek's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as outlined in Resolution No. 2022-012, supporting the Race to Zero Initiative.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this ordinance.
