BACKGROUND:
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides matching grant funding through the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) for the development of recreational trails, trailheads, and trailside facilities. The program provides grant funding up to $350,000 for non-motorized trails and requires up to an equal match. The Oak Trails Park trail system is a component of the Oak Trails Park Expansion Capital Improvement Project (CIP).
DISCUSSION:
The City is committed to smart growth by consistently supporting fiscally responsible projects that preserve character-defining features that make Coconut Creek unique. On March 10, 2022, the City Commission approved Resolution No. 2022-048, authorizing the City Manager to execute a grant agreement with the Florida Communities Trust for the Forever Florida Grant Program, which awarded the City a $1,135,649.10 reimbursement grant for the acquisition of two (2) properties adjacent to the existing Oak Trails Park located at 4230 NW 74 Street. As part of that agreement, the City committed to developing Oak Trails Park with certain amenities, including a 2,500 linear foot trail.
On January 23, 2025, the City Commission approved Resolution No. 2025-007, approving the site plan for the renovation and expansion of Oak Trails Park. The trail system expansion project is a component of the approved site plan.
