A RESOLUTION URGING THE SCHOOL BOARD OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, TO FULLY FUND SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS FOR EVERY SCHOOL WITHIN BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, AND TO FULLY FUND THE TOTAL COSTS FOR SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS FOR EACH PUBLIC SCHOOL WITHIN BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA.

body

BACKGROUND:

At the November 10, 2022, City Commission Meeting, this item was tabled to a date certain of December 8, 2022.

Pursuant to Section 1006.07, Florida Statutes, the School Board of Broward County is responsible for the safe school officers program and should fully fund the annual cost per School Resource Officer (SRO), which includes the salary, benefits, vehicle, and other related ancillary expenses that the police officer incurs when assigned as an SRO at a Broward County school.

DISCUSSION:

The School Board of Broward County is only funding a fraction of the total costs of assigned SROs through the agreement with the City of Coconut Creek, effectively leaving our residents to fund the balance of the cost of the SROs, which amounts to double taxation to our taxpayers. In the School Board’s budget for Fiscal Year 2022-2023, the City of Coconut Creek strongly urges that the School Board of Broward County to fully fund the safe school officers program/SRO program, on a per officer basis, to more accurately reflect the cost of the officers assigned to the schools in the City of Coconut Creek.

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
