A PRESENTATION TO THE CITY COMMISSION RELATING TO A POSSIBLE ORDINANCE LIMITING PLASTIC IN THE COMMUNITY.

body

BACKGROUND:

Resolution No. 2020-063 affirmed the City’s intention to reduce the use of single-use plastic items in its operations, to increase public outreach efforts relating to the effect of plastic in the environment and the reduction of single-use plastic items, and to encourage businesses and restaurants within the City to reduce the use of single-use plastic items such as straws, retail bags, and polystyrene foam containers.

However, since that time, the Commission has discussed the desire to expand the concepts of the resolution to a single-use plastic ordinance.  Staff was directed to review portions of the City of Gainesville’s Solid Waste Ordinance 210129 that would further the effort to reduce single-use plastic in our community. A presentation has been prepared by Public Works and Sustainable Development to discuss the Gainesville requirements, Coconut Creek goals, and staff recommendations.
