AGENDA ITEM REPORT

TITLE:

title

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR AND THE CITY MANAGER, OR DESIGNEE, TO EXECUTE THE SECOND AMENDMENT TO THE SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL SUPPORT SERVICES INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT (ILA) WITH BROWARD COUNTY FOR THE PURPOSE OF UTILIZING WASTE-TO-ENERGY SERVICES PROVIDED BY WHEELABRATOR SOUTH BROWARD.

body

BACKGROUND:

In January of 2013, the City of Coconut Creek entered into an ILA with Broward County for Solid Waste Disposal Services, which included waste-to-energy services provided by Wheelabrator South Broward (“Wheelabrator”) through July 2018. In 2018, the City extended its participation in the ILA through July of 2023. The Broward County Commission recently authorized the second extension of their agreement with Wheelabrator through July of 2028.

DISCUSSION:

Waste-to-energy disposal is a more environmentally sound manner of disposing of solid waste and reduces the amount of waste that would otherwise be landfilled. Additionally, waste-to-energy disposal contributes greatly towards achieving the City’s recycling goals. To that end, it is in the City’s best interest to extend our involvement in the Broward County Solid Waste Disposal Support Services ILA for the purpose of utilizing waste-to-energy services provided by Wheelabrator.

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.
