A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE BROWARD LEAGUE OF CITIES RESOLUTION TO INCREASE THE CURRENT FUNDING ALLOCATED BY THE SCHOOL BOARD OF BROWARD COUNTY FOR SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS FROM $46,252 TO $56,252 PER OFFICER FOR ALL PARTICIPATING AGENCIES.

body

BACKGROUND:

The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is established for the purposes set forth in Section 230.2318, Florida Statutes, including assistance in the prevention of juvenile delinquency through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions that give rise to delinquency.

DISCUSSION:

The SRO Program is a great benefit to school administration, students, and the community as a whole.  The City currently has eight (8) SROs within the following Coconut Creek schools: Coconut Creek Elementary, Winston Park Elementary, Tradewinds Elementary, Lyons Creek Middle, Coconut Creek High (2), Monarch High, and Atlantic Technical Center.  The City’s current Agreement is for $370,016, or $46,252 per SRO, from August 14, 2017, until June 7, 2018.

Since 2011, the amount of funding provided for SROs has not been adjusted.  The current amount of $46,252 covers only 30-40% of the total cost for the SRO, and local governments must absorb the balance of these costs.  This Resolution supports similar resolutions adopted by other cities and the Broward League of Cities (attached), and urges the School Board of Broward County to increase funding per SRO from $46,252 to $56,252, an increase of $10,000.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
