BACKGROUND:

The Florida Greenways and Trails System is a network of greenways and trails throughout Florida, connecting one end of the State to the other, from Key West to Pensacola.  The City applied to the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the designation of the Greenway Trail in Sabal Pines Park and the Hilton Road Greenway Trail as part of the Florida Greenways and Trails System. On September 22, 2016, the Florida Greenways and Trails Council approved the City’s applications for the greenways and trails designations, subject to submittal of the attached Designation Agreements.

DISCUSSION:

Upon review of our applications, the State recognized a wonderful opportunity to expand the designation of the trails to include the surrounding park areas and recommended that they be included. Consequently, the designation for Sabal Pines now includes not only the Greenway but the entire park area as well. Similarly, the designation for the Hilton Road Greenway Trail now includes all of the adjacent Winston Park Nature Center.

The Sabal Pines Park and Greenway Trail and the Winston Park Nature Center and Hilton Road Greenway Trail will be Coconut Creek’s second and third designations by the Florida Greenways and Trails Program. The first designation was the Pine Creek Greenway. These trails play a large role in connecting our local greenway system, and support this very important State initiative designating lands or waterways as part of the statewide system of greenways and trails. Sustainable Development and Parks and Recreation have reviewed the designations and both departments see this as a wonderful opportunity to showcase our trails.
