BACKGROUND:

The City is committed to protecting its residents and visitors, and to the protection of property, while creating a safe environment for all who live in, work in, or visit our community. The City is also committed to retaining a high-quality workforce and ensuring public safety. The Police Chief is requesting the use of Law Enforcement Trust Funds (LETF) to advance these commitments to public safety. In addition, utilizing LETF funds to help pay School Resource Officers (SROs) to provide safety and peace of mind for school, staff, students, and their families helps solidify these commitments.

DISCUSSION:

Please see the attached memo from Police Chief Albert A. “Butch” Arenal to City Manager Karen Brooks, explaining the request to purchase a new Crime Scene van and accessories in the amount of Seventy Thousand Dollars ($70,000) and night vision goggles for the SWAT Team in the amount of Seventy Thousand Dollars ($70,000) from the Federal Forfeiture Justice Fund, the request for a donation to the Police Explorer Post in the amount of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000) from the State Forfeiture Fund to assist with training and purchasing new equipment and uniforms, and the request for One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000) for School Resource Officers’ (SROs) salaries for Fiscal Year 2024 from the Federal Forfeiture Treasury Fund.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approval of this resolution.

NOTES:                     There is $275,305.61 available in the Federal Forfeiture Justice Fund Account #6261 to cover the purchase of the Crime Scene van and night vision goggles for the SWAT Team, $157,571.54 available in the Federal Forfeiture Treasury Fund Account #6296 for the School Resource Officers' salaries, and $84,358.60 available in the State Forfeiture Fund Account #6361 to make a donation to the Police Explorers Post.
