A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER, OR DESIGNEE, TO ENTER INTO THE GRANT AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO RECEIVE FUNDING FROM THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF BROWARD FOR THE ART OF COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM.

body

BACKGROUND:

In April of 2017, the Community Foundation of Broward began receiving applications for the 2017-2018 Art of Community Grant Program, which supports projects that ignite creativity, invoke community pride, and create a sense of place that connects people with where they live and each other. The Department of Sustainable Development submitted a grant application on May 4, 2017, for the “Butterfly Mile Markers” project to place uniquely designed mileage markers, in conjunction with artwork designed by a commissioned artist, on City-owned trails and greenways. This project was designed to demonstrate the authenticity and uniqueness of the City, while engaging local artists.  It also supports the City’s Greenways Master Plan, as approved by the City Commission on May 10, 2007.

DISCUSSION:

On June 2, 2017, the Community Foundation awarded the City of Coconut Creek a $25,000 grant for the “Butterfly Mile Markers” project.  This Resolution authorizes the City Manager to execute the grant agreement required to receive funding from the Community Foundation of Broward. The Community Foundation requires a 1:1 match through a combination of cash and in-kind services. In-kind services are proposed to be provided by City staff to the extent acceptable by the Community Foundation of Broward.  The City’s cash match has been designated for project planning and design efforts available through the Public Art Trust Fund, totaling a maximum of $25,000. The proposed project will place mileage markers every quarter mile on all City owned trails and greenways in conjunction with strategically placed artwork. The City currently has eight greenways and trails, which provide over four miles of passive recreation. It should be noted that the public art installations would be determined through a formal procurement process, which will ultimately establish a final project scope and budget.

Staff recommends approval of this Resolution.
